למד באוניברסיטה העברית ובאוניברסיטת ייל. פרופסור לקולנוע וספרות השוואתית באוניברסיטת וושינגטון שבסיאטל, ארה"ב. חוקר בעיקר את תולדות הקולנוע הסיני וייסד את סדנת הקיץ באקדמיה הסינית לקולנוע, בייג'ינג. פירסם למעלה מ-40 מאמרים וכן את הספרים:
